When I read in the newspaper that casualties in Iraq had reached 4,000 it seemed necessary to address these deaths. The fallen soldier drawings are a direct response to this news. The soldiers now lie in a field that is a still life or Nature Mort. They are drawn in the purest way I know with the simplest pencil line and combined with other images of mortality. No drama or drum beats, just the silence of the field.
